Ethnos (2021)
Ethnos is a two-screen video art piece that delves into the complexities of the Varkiza Treaty, a pivotal and divisive moment in Greek history. By juxtaposing disparate perspectives of this historical event, the work initiates a dialogue on how historical narratives are constructed and understood. Through editing techniques, the dual screens weave together fragmented archival footage and contemporary imagery, creating a layered narrative that mirrors the duality of the Treaty itself.
The sonic dimension, crafted with meticulously manipulated sounds, amplifies the tension, inviting viewers to experience the "Archive Effect"—a phenomenon where archival materials are perceived are unquestionable facts. This artistic exploration provokes critical reflection on the nature of historical truth and the biases inherent in identity-building. Ethnos challenges viewers to confront the tensions between history as a fixed record and as a dynamic, subjective construct, encouraging a deeper understanding of our cultural and personal narratives.
