Amsterdam

Duration

24'

This evocative video art piece, titled "Small Totem I," explores the delicate interplay of time, identity, and environmental fragility, drawing inspiration from Manolis Anagnostakis' poem "Η αγάπη είναι ο φόβος" (Love is Fear). Over 20 hypnotic minutes, the film captures the melting of sculpted ice—etched with the poem’s words—into dark soil, evoking the impermanence of love, fear, and memory. The ice, a transient totem of water's essential yet endangered nature, dissolves slowly, raising questions about sustainability and the erosion of natural and emotional worlds. The soil absorbs the words, merging ephemerality with endurance, symbolizing the marks we leave on an increasingly fragile Earth.

Purposefully mute, the silence deepens the connection to the imagery, transforming the melting ice into a small totem of loss and reverence. This absence of sound amplifies the desolation of biodiversity loss and the looming scarcity of water, inviting viewers to meditate on the fragile balance between humanity and nature. Through its quiet ritual, "Small Totem I" offers a poignant reflection on the sacredness of water and the enduring call for preservation in a world on the brink.
