On 23 September 1998, Greek-Romanian fugitive Sorin Matei took four people hostage in an apartment on Niovis Street in Athens and spoke live on television for four hours, threatening to detonate a grenade. When the police stormed the apartment, the grenade exploded, killing Amalia Ginaki; Matei died three days later under unclear circumstances in prison. It was Greece's first televised death, yet the footage of those four hours has vanished from every archive.
You Will Only See a Flash of Light turns that absence into its method. On a black stage, performers become the hostages while Matei never appears, his threat living only offscreen and in their bodies. Alongside the public event runs a private one: conversations with my family about the violence inside our own home, and a circle of women who laments together. The film asks what happens when the house becomes hostile ground, and what it means to be kept company by a catastrophe on screen.
