I will be hosting a workshop titled Low-Budget Filmmaking as Method as part of the Greek Film Festival Netherlands Professionals programme.
The workshop starts from a simple reversal. Instead of approaching low-budget filmmaking as a limitation to overcome, it considers it as a deliberate artistic and ethical position. Much of the most precise and politically aware cinema of the last decades was made under conditions of reduction not as compromise, but as method.
From Chantal Akerman filming in her own apartment, to Abbas Kiarostami working with minimal crews, to Harun Farocki structuring films around absence, these practices suggest that working with less can produce a different relationship to image, production, and authorship.
This session invites participants to rethink scale, resources, and control — not in terms of lack, but as a way of positioning their work more precisely.
